______________________________________________________________________________________________________________Published by: Adam S. Nally, D.O. Here it is! You have come to the second part in this series of answers to questions about helping you achieve your weight goals. The second myth that I commonly hear is: "Snacking is bad for you." This isn't really true. Snacking can be an important part of your dietary program. You will experience cravings for certain foods for a number of reasons. Hunger, boredom, the need for comfort, electrolyte imbalance and even addictions can all cause cravings or the desire to snack. It is important to identify why you are having cravings or why you feel like snacking. If you are not eating small appropriate meals every 3-4 hours, it is not uncommon to get hungry and want to snack. As we saw in our previous e-mail. Carbohydrate containing foods cause weight gain, so what would be an approprate snack? Appropriate snacks would be fat or protein containing foods like string cheese, beef jerky, almonds, or walnuts. Yes, I am telling you to eat more fat! But, you can only do this if you are limiting your carbohydrate intake. We will cover the "why" in more depth in our next discussions. Snacking every 3-4 hours can actually help your metabolism. If your body is being fed every few hours, it is much less likely to store fat, as the hunger stimulus is not as strong and the stimulus to store fat notably decreases. Eating every 3-4 hours has been shown to decrease hunger and to decrease overall weight gain. The most important part of snacking is to ensure that you are eating foods that will not stimulate a strong insulin response. Looking for low carbohydrate containing snacks that can be carried with you or easily accessible went you get hungry or get a craving is the key. There are a number of protein shakes, bars or powders that also work well in these instances. There are a number of great resources for snacks that are low in carbohydrates that you can find here on my blog. Did this help? I hope so!
